Durante trodo éste tiempo se fueron desarrollando distintos métodos de boxeo y manejo de armas como complemento del entrenamiento Chan (Zen) de ésta rama particular de monjes budistas. La práctica de las artes marciales sirvió también para la defensa de los monjes en épocas particularmente turbulentas de la historia china, de hecho, llegaron a existir grupos de monjes que fueron reclutados como guerreros de elite en el ejército, lo que ayudó a consolidar la fama de Shaolin en el mundo de las artes marciales chinas.<br />Este prestigio hizo que a muchos estilos agregara la palabra Shaolin a sus nombres. Algunos por haber servido como base técnica para la creación del boxeo Shaolin, mientras que otros por ser derivados laicos del boxeo de los monjes. También existen muchos estilos que no tienen conexión probada con el boxeo del templo, pero sus difusores agregaban el título Shaolin para darle más prestigio y credibilidad.<span style="color: black;"></span><br /><div align="justify"><div style="border-bottom: medium none;
